On my epson printer DX8450 when you select the properties tab all instructions are in German - can these be changed over to English??

Sounds like you've installed the software without checking the language for installation. Try uninstalling the software then reinstalling it, paying attention to all the pages during the install, in particular when you're asked for language preferences.
