can I get a report from work and put it onto my kindle to read?

The Kindle natively supports mobipocket (unencrypted), plain text, Audible files, MP3, and of course its own AZW. Additionally Amazon has a free converter for Word, HTML, PDF, and various image formats.
So if your work documents are in any of those formats you can copy them to the Kindle and read them at home.

My Kindle will read PDF files without having them converted.

so will mine, just drag and drop from pc via usb

Just remember to drag it into 'Documents' folder on Kindle.
