I have an old PC and I think the motherboard is dead, there's a replacement one on an auction asus p4v533-mx is it just a case swapping all the leads or do I need to download drivers etc. Or is it complicated and not worth it for an old PC?

Usually not worth it moneywise if pc is very old. You don't mention what other usable bits it has inside. Might be better/cheaper to buy another old pc with a motherboard that does work and then make one pc up from both.
Also the Op Sys (XP?) if it's OEM and tied to the motherboard you will run into difficulties.
Worth doing if you are a 'tinkerer' and would enjoy the doing of it.
