Windows 7 backup, how do you stop it ?

I have a 1Tb C drive on my computer that only has 194 mg on it and a 500Gig D drive to use as a backup drive. Windows backup was setup to do it's stuff every Sunday, but after 2 weeks I get a warning keep flashing up that my D drive is full. As I say I only have 194 gig on the C drive. How can the backup be so big and how can I stop it from working as I want to just copy Photographs onto one drive and music onto another then files on to yet another drive, instead of doing a full backup.
