XP Freezes on Windows screen - OK in Safe Mode

Not seen this before. PC freezes at the Windows screen - the bar at the bottom scrolls for a few seconds before stopping. Starts OK in safe mode. Nothing added or downloaded recently. System Restore went through the motions, then same happened on reboot.
Would appreciate a logical sequence to investigate this. Thanks

Look in device manager and see if any yellow exclamation marks beside any of the programs .
Have you tried last good configuration in safe mode.

You may not have downloaded anything deliberately but have you got automatic updates on for XP or for you graphics driver? Can you go further back into System Restore?

It uses less drivers in safe mode that's why I thought of that.
Air vents clear of dust and fluff if not inside may need cleaning up.
You could try sfc /scannow in command prompt but you would probably need the XP CD with SP3 on it probably.
Have you enough memory and disk space left.Or could it be your PSU on the way out.
All I can think of is to give chkdsk a run and see if it finds any problems.
Then again if it does not run in normal mode running chkdsk might not be a good idea.Best waiting for some advice from others.

driver problem usually - in safe mode uninstall drivers one at a time (start with graphics) reboot to normal mode, let windows find new hardware and reinstall driver.

Thanks all - tried going further back - no joy. Played around with the drivers with no change. Spoken to the owner - taken off data to an external HDD and will try a re-install. Probably quicker in the long run.
