laptop wont recognise any plug in hard drive after crash

Hi can anyone please help.i had a crash and had to create a new user profile, now any hard drive i plug in my laptop wont recognise it.i have loads of files and a full back up on one and family pics and my whole i tunes library on another.Please help as i ddont know how to fix this,thanks vista home premium 32 bit hp presario cq 60

Try another pc or if that fails,go into device manager see if there is any exclamation marks in the usb contoller list,uninstall the said item exclemation item restart pc without plugging in your external drive,once it restartes let the pc settle down (HD light not burbling away)then plug in your drive and see if it works.I've been known to uninstall all usb controllers and just start my pc.
