best free registry cleaner

Any recommendations for downloading a free registry cleaner?

Is one likely to be useful? Any disadvantages?

Windows is getting increasingly slow on my PC, might a registry cleaner speed it up?

Thanks a lot, Laurence F, Dell PC, Windows XP Service Pack 3

Thanks very much for your helpful comments, john, sunnystaines and p;3.

John: back-ups - do you mean on to a USB stick? I do this every so often, plus I use Sugarsync.

P;3: It now takes 3 mins 15 secs between turning the PC on and my homepage coming up on Firefox, as opposed to 90 secs 2 years ago.

Word documents and webpages are usually much slower to bring up than they were. Firefox and Chrome crash quite often.

I have 1 GB RAM, and 51% free space in the C Drive.

Thanks a lot, difarn; the article looks really useful.

Thanks John, onthelimit and p;3 for your helpful comments.

p;3, I currently use Micosoft Security Essentials (with daily checks), and occasionally run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Is this good? Should I do something else?

Cheers, Laurence

Thanks a lot, wiz-king and difarn.

Difarn (or someone else) what is the possible harm that a reputable cleaner might do, please?

I'll have a look at the housekeeping, thanks, although I have XP, not 7.

Cheers, Laurence F

Thanks a lot, Terry and difarn. Interesting opinions: I will investigate and decide carefully.

Difarn - thanks for all of this generous help. Did you actually attach the article? If so, where should I find it?

Cheers again, Laurence
