wifi on orange livebox in France

I am staying with friends in France.They have Orange livebox-ce24 I cannot connect to the internet.When asked for the pass word , nothing happens the cursor just does not move. I have windows XP Dell inspiron .All other connections in the past have worked ok and still do all the pass words have been retained .Any advice please

will it connect by cable?

have you selected the correct type of security WEP / WPA?

have they change the password from the one prined on the livebox?

Thanks for response .Firstly I don't have a cable with me ,the password is ok have checked it,when this occured at another friends a cable did give me a connection.What is a WEP or any other key ?I know very little,except where the on/off switch is.
