I get this message when starting a Compaq Presario CQ60-420SA. Forums suggest that the CMOS battery should be replaced. If it is a CMOS battery problem, surely the laptop would not maintain date and time, which is not the case. So, does the message mean that I need to replace the Li-on battery?

Your assumption is correct - the CMOS doesn't need replacing.
I did a Google search and found this cached article. The message you're getting refers to the the laptop's main battery. You can either get yourself a new one, or if you always run the laptop on AC power, leave things as they are.
