I have a usb to micro usb lead with what appears to be a "filter" in the lead. whats the purpose of this as it appears to prevent my remote controller for my projector being used as a remote power point controller. If i use a lead without the "filter" it seems ok.

The Ferrite filter is there to reduce interference with any signals passing through the lead. It is likely your remote control is seen as 'interference'.
