USB 2.0 Ports not working

Hi.

Wondering if anyone can help please.

A couple of weeks ago I did something which meant that my USB ports now no longer respond to anything inserted in them. I connected two external HDDs via the usb ports on my laptop as I wanted to move files from one of the externals to another and something just happened which meant that the laptop froze and started making a long single beeping sound. I was forced to press and hold the power button.

.

I have done the uninstall thing in task manager. and when they automatically reinstalled they still didnt work. I am running XP SP3. Thank you in advance. Rob

Are they shown OK in device manager?

It sounds as if you overloaded them (more than 500mA) and the fuse (non replaceable) on the motherboard has blown.

In device manager Uninstall EVERYTHING under the heading USB, reboot the PC let XP find and install new hardware.

Hi- Yes, all are working properly under properties in device manager.

I am surprised if I have done that as (I meant to write in original post) both the external drives were mains powered....

How does one get around this then outside of warranty? Thanks

I did the above and I had no joy.

Is there any other suggestions rather than having to buy a network card?

Thanks
