Programme's won't close down from desktop

Hi, hope someone can help me. When I click on the minimise or exit button in the top right corner of a programme the programme freezes and stays on screen. If I open something after, like solitaire, I can pick it and move it round the screen and it wipes all the icons off the desktop and the previous programme. I'm running windows XP. Cheers

This answer in Techarena is the only one I could find for Windows XP and it suggests that you have a virus present that needs to be cleaned out. Have you run a virus and/or malware scan?
