Hello Everyone

First of all I apologise for having very little technical knowledge. I am sure you get used to helping dinosaurs but you may need extreme patience!

We have a main pc which when switched on goes no further than showing the Windows xp logo.

The pc is a E machines 3240, 80gb, 256mb, Intel 505 processor (?)

It is about 5 years old from pc world

Well...over to you..can it be sorted or should i scrap it/

thanks

Old man Phil

Do you have a XP cd?

first reboot the machine and keep tapping F8 as it starts you should hten get a menu up (try F5 if F8 does nothing).

From the menu select Last Known good configuration

see if it then loads windows.

Maybe try in safe mode and see if it will work on there.

Safe Mode, Just keep tapping F8 as the computer starts.

5years old. Check the air vents for dust and fluff if any inside will need cleaning out as well.

A paint brush and a hoover with a plastic nozzle will do.Should have said make sure the power is disconnected.

Make sure the fans are working and Ok and any dust fluff embedded on the CPU should be removed.

That is something to try while waiting for better information.

Hello and thanks for your replies..

I did the f8 thing and followed the instructions but nothing happened ,

The fans are working i think as their is a whirring noise.

I do have cd..if it is the one you mean..it says..restore dvd ver 1.1 3240

So i dont know if any other solutions to try?

Thanks

Phil

That may wipe your drive back to Factory Settings (it should prompt first).

Or it may offer some Repair Options.

Do you have anything important on there?

It's possible boot from a Linux Live CD and transfer important docs and files to Flash stick or external drive first if you need to before trying the Restore CD.

When you put in the CD it should give you the option to repair Windows.

I would go with that first before trying anything else.

As it can be a pain trying to get files back etc.

Unless there is nothing of importance on it then just do a fresh install.

OK..

Really struggling with this..

There are lots of photos on the pc that we dont want to lose..

My wife says just take it to a shop and pay someone..

If i do put the cd in and lose photos my life will be made miserable..i guess i have no choice!

Thanks anyway

Borrow a XP CD

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

  1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

  2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

  1. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

  1. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

  2. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

  3. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

When trying safe mode did you keep tapping F8 or F5 as the computer started just keeping your finger on it probably will not work.

5 year old have you ever cleaned the inside of the computer yet.

Did you check to see if the air vents were clear of dust and fluff.

256 Mb of ram and 80Gb hard drive may be the problem Surprised that Xp can run on that memory.I had 512Mb on mine and it ran very slow.

Try disconnecting all accessories, eg printer, scanner and whatever, except for mouse and keyboard. I suffered the same problem some time ago and it transpired that the driver of my scanner had somehow got corrupted and was stopping the PC getting beyond the logo stage when booting.

If you have another computer then you can take the harddrive out of the problem one and hook it up as an extra drive on another computer.

Then you can just copy your photos (and anything else you want to save) to the other computers harddrive.
