microsoft updates

Good evening all I have 9 xp updates and 7 office updates that will not install. they have downloaded ok,but as I say will not install. have tried restring pc to an earlier date, and selecting custom and tried to install updates one at a time but they all fail. I wanted to delete orignal downloads and start again but not sure where to find them. any help would be appreciated Many thanks

Problem sorted.Updates installed during shutdown stage as per johnnyrocker,and lotvic, strange never done that before.Also bookmarked butemans link.hanks to you all for your contributions.
