Drive letter allocation

Hi I have a pc with a few external drives attached, these are used to hold data and perform automatic backups.
Ip until now the drive letter allocated to the drives have stayed constant but when I boot up my pc two or the drives are now allocationg different letters.
This would not normally be a problem but my back up software has for example copy drive E to F but now E may not exist and F now maybe G.
So how do I manually allocate the drive letters for my external drivers and change the ones back that have gone wrong?
Help please?
