Hello

Totally new here, but hoping someone can help. My folks have this laptop with 60g harddrive, not sure what working memory it has, but it is slow as hell. The hard drive says that it has used 40g however I have no idea what this 40g is made up of my folks literally only use it to surf the net (facebook, news sites etc.) They don't stream anything, have never used Youtube or downloaded anything (music, films etc.) They don't have any music or films stored on there. They don't run any large programms. They literally only ever have internet exlplorer open.

Can someone point me in the right direction as of what I can do to help them out?

Really appreciate any replies/advice.

Cheers.

Will do that indeed. Any ideas what might be taking up the almost 40g of disk space since there's nothing on there of any importance (films, music, documents etc.)?

If you run CC cleaner and go into "Tools" you will see details of the programmes installed and their size.

System restore allocates a large amount of hard drive space for system restore points, which you won't see if looking at Tools in CCleaner as it's a hidden system file, same for space allocated by windows for the recycle bin. You could always reduce SR and Recycle bin default sizes to regain some free hard drive space.

I'm assuming operating system is Vista?

In addition to reclaiming more free disk space by reducing system restore and recycle bin sizes, to reclaim more space maybe turn off the hibernate shutdown feature in Vista if it's enabled as one of your shutdown options and you don't use Hibernate

Don't know whether your Vista has service packs 1 or 2 installed from windows update, if so you could think about removing the backup files that are left in case of wanting to revert back to pre service pack state

Find out what if any service pack is installed

But get more RAM as mentioned, whether you need to restore to factory or not, more RAM will help.
