Unwanted clicks playing classical music iTune files

I have been trying to get all my CDs onto a spare laptop using iTunes and its excellent filing system. A USB link to a "Benchmark" DAC1 allows me to play the files through my hifi system. Unfortunately in quiet passages of classical music I hear random clicks and pops. I can also hear these clicks if I listen through the laptop's audio system. I copied a file to my desktop PC for playing where the clicks disappeared so they do not seem to part of the file. Likewise I copied a file from my desktop to the laptop which re-introduced the clicks. I therefore deduced that the problem is not caused by the laptop's CD drive or its sound system but possibly by the way it handles digital files between the processor and the hard drive. Has anyone else had a similar experience and any ideas? For the record, the laptop is a DELL Inspiron 1501 using an Athlon 64 X2 TK53 processor (1.7MHz). I have increased its RAM from 512KB to 2MB and replaced Vista by Win 7.
