Download speeds

I have just got a new PC Dell Inspiron One with a i7-2600s processor,819mb 133mhz ddr3,2 tb hard drive,1gb nvidia geforce gt52m graphics card with win 7 OS. I have been dissapointed with the speed on this new PC and have been in touch with dell, the agent tested the systen on www.speedtest.net (I think that was the address)my question is I had to download some files I had saved on Virgin media today and I moniterd the progress, it took 25/30 min to download 354MB and the download screen said " 365 kb/sec" my ISP provides me a 30mb speed. Can anyone tell me if the figures I give are what I can expect from 30 MB speed?, as the Dell agent is calling me back on monday to see if Im happy with the PC. I have only my old laptop to compere new one with and to be honest there is no noticeable difference between them. I did contact Virgin also and they said "internet connection is OK it must be your PC" I have run side by side speed tests from the site above and both my husbands and my old laptop came out way above the new one.

Thoughts on this appriecated

Speeds on the 7.44 post are spot on so no problem with them.

So not a virgin problem.

Is there any parts of McAfee left if so that may slow the computer down.

kidsis The wireless card in new pc is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6230 primary Auto IP Address: 192.168.0.3 / 24 Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Dhcp Server: 192.168.0.1 Physical Address: 88:53:2E:3B:AE:AC Connection Speed: 144 Mbps This info is taken from Belarc

I dont know what b/g means when you ask about the router, but I do know that it is Virgins latest tehnolgy for "wireless"

As buteman as already pointed out your speeds are fine hence the problem is not your router or Virgin. This leaves your system and settings. As I asked you earlier 1 What was preinstalled on your system ( inc Trial Programs ) 2 What did you unstall and by what metdod ( was McFee preinstalled ) 3 What did you then install

With these peaple may be able to see if there are conflicts and offer advice.

The request was mainley for programs that were preinstalled and replaced or removed. Belarc lists all the programs actually installed I can see even from this list there are many programs that may well conflict however this may allow someone with far more knowledge than I have to help

Without having to go through all that I noticed F Secure.

Is that another security program you have or did I misread it.

Is it the 64Bit version of Windows 7 you have if so make sure you run the 32Bit version of I/E9 and not the 64 Bit version.

Also make sure you have compatibility mode ticked under tools.

Have you downloaded all the updates from Microsoft.

If so maybe a defrag might help.

Have you any other security programs as well Kaspersky as it will not stop everything.

And when you press start and type McAfee into the box does it show anything at all for it.

sharpamat,

Sorry about that, the only thing I have changed is uninstalled McAfee then installed Kaspersky ( I ran the uninstall tool for it)

Buteman

I searched for F Secure there were no results, The Dell agent advised me to run 32 bit IE because he say's " lots of websites cannot support 64 bit yet"

Compatibilty mode was not ticked Compatabilty so I did that. All microsoft updates are done.

Defrag might help, will do one after posting this.

Have you any other security programs as well Kaspersky as it will not stop everything?.As far as Im aware the is only Kaspersky installed, Win Defender is turned off.

And when you press start and type McAfee into the box does it show anything at all for it. No no results for McAfee

It may be worth a try to enable defender and disable Kaspersky see how it runs and post back. When you installed Kaspersky did you turn off windows firewall

Thanks sharpamat

It made no difference disabling kaspersky/enabling win defender.

I did not disable win defender before installing kaspersky, shall I un/reinstall kaspersky and disable win defender?
