AVCHD Converter - any suggestions?

Hi I have some SONY AVCHD videos which, after a new installation, won't play. Have tried VLC etc. Sony won't support the new installation of XP Home. :-( - so anyone using Sony PMB software BE AWARE. Is there a free AVCHD converter or is the only option to buy a 1-year subscription for between $30-40? Thanks Paul2008
