Canon Pixma Error 5400

My Canon Pixma MP510 multi-function printer has recently become unusable. When I turn it on, it goes into its pre-clean cycle, then suddenly there is a bang and it stops. On the printer's screen, the message "Error code 5400" appears and it refuses to print or scan. Can anyone please help me sort this out.

Thanks for trying, but I don't think the problem is a paper jam. I've checked, just to be certain and I'm fairly sure there's no jam. apart from this, the printer was working perfectly the last time I used it, just over a week ago. Thanks again, anyway.

Then it sounds like a paper feed mechanism failure.
