Virus corrupted HDD

I posted yesterday asking the question about getting rid of certain virus's. The virus has now stopped me accessing my computer. It will not start in Safe Mode, or normally. Somebody has mentioned that if I insert a Partition Manager cd, I should be able to Format the HDD. Will formatting delete the virus(s)? I relise it will clear all the files, but that does not matter. I do not have a Windows disc, apart from an old XP, but I am on Vista on this HD.

If you set your bios to boot up on CD rom, put your XP disc in and follow the instructions you should be able to format your HDD.
