Best order to load new memory?

Hi folks, long time no see. I've just bought some new memory to add to what I have already. The system uses an Asus A8N -SLI Deluxe MOBO with AMD Athalon 64x2 - 4400+ processors on board. I only have 1GB of memory at present in the shape of 2x512mb memory cards. The new ones are 2x1GB and my question is this:- I have 4 slots total - do I keep the 2x512 cards where they are and put the 2x1GB cards in the other two slots or do I change them round so that the 2x1gb cards are at the front and the others behind - or doesn't it make one whit of a difference what order they are in as long as they are in pairs?

As far as I can see, your motherboard supports dual-channel memory configurations so you may find that adding those two new modules actually degrades the performance. Dual-channel mode only works when all the modules share the same attributes (such as CAS latency etc).

To answer your question though, it should be fine to add those 1GB modules in the currently available slots.

Always looking for bench marking software,thanks Secret-Squirrel.

As to the original posters question, sell the 512MB sticks and buy another couple of 1GB.Sticking you new RAM alongside the old will bring little benefit.

Thanks guys. Think I'll try with the lot in at the same time and use the link for the memory benchmark. If nothing else I can upgrade the front slots to the 1gb each which should give a reasonable increase.
