hdmi tv overrides pc monitor

I've an ASUS graphics card with hdmi on my windows 7 pc. I thought it would be a good idea to connect the pc to my plasma tv via the hdmi output for movies games etc. This turned out to be easy and worked great....until that is I chose to work on the pc using my normal HannsG monitor and the kids wanted use of the tv for an xbox game. As soon as the tv switched on my monitor went blank. Obviously the hdmi overrides the monitor connection. Is there any way of adjusting this or changing the preferrences? What are my options?
Thanks

Click on start/all programs/Accessories/connect to projector. You should have options like Computer, duplicate, extend and projector only.
On my computer if I select Projector only the signal goes to the Monitor and disconnects to from my TV.
