Avast free anti-virus no longer free

Have been happily using Avast anti-virus for some time now but today I was advised that my 'subscription has expired' and that I need to renew. Unfortunately it would seem free protection is no longer available as when I click on the 'Renew now' button I'm directed to Avast site to renew for £39.99 (after £10 'loyalty' discount). Redownloading the free version gives me a message 'there was an error changing the product configuration' when I try to install it.

Can anyone advise if this is in fact the case (ie that I'm not doing anything incredibly stupid)? If it's not longer free, what do people currently recommend for free protection?

Sometimes you have to renew the free licence, usually once a year at least that was how you did it years ago.

I had probs with the 'Renew now' link as well, I finally renewed successfully by going to:

http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php#register-form I entered name & email addy (the original one that my expired Avast was registered with) to send new key to.

Received email: (although it says Avast 5 it worked ok for Avast 6)

Dear avast! user,Your registration of avast! free antivirus was successful. Your license key must now be inserted into the program.Your license key is:---------- cut here ----------WXXXXXXXXXXXXX-ASXXXXXXX---------- cut here –

If you are using avast! Free Antivirus v5.0, you will see an orange ball icon.** For users of avast! Free Antivirus v5.0 (orange ball) ** 1. Highlight the license key above, then right click on it and select "Copy" 2. Right click the orange "a-ball" in the bottom right corner of the screen, then left click "Registration information" 3. Click the "Insert license key" button at the bottom of the screen. 4. Right click in the empty Registration box then select "Paste" 5. Click "OK". Your license key is now inserted and the program can now be used free of charge for a further 12 months.

Sorry for delay relying - had to go out. Thank you Graphicool1, uninstalling old version seems to have done the trick. And thank you everyone else who offered help and advice.

I have one new problem, however. Since carrying out the above, whenever I open a new page in Firefox, I get the following message: 'PLogin-container.exe - Application Error The instruction at "0x84eb9ecb" referenced memory at "0x84eb9ecb". The memory could not be "read" Click on OK to terminate programme.'

Clicking on OK does not stop the message returning and appearing to cause long delay opening new page. Anyone have any ideas what's happening?

When I wrote 'long delay' I meant about 40-50 seconds when wthe browser locks up.

I've had a search and although I've seen others with the same or similar problems, I can find no tangable solution. You could always uninstall and reinstall FF.

What version have you got, I have FF 7.0.1, I don't have a problem.

Graphicool1, I have the same version of Firefox as you. Since posting last message, I've discovered the problem is much worse than originally stated: so far, have found I can't open Word, play movies/music, open Outlook (which has my address book). I tried to use System restore but can't open that either!!!!!

Could it be Avast WebRep.I have that on add on's in Firefox but I have the paid version of Avast.

Maybe reinstall Firefox then install it again like Graphicool1 says.I suppose you would need to uninstall it completely which will also remove all of your favorites.
