IDE hard drive to usb?

My friend's desktop is dead. We want to get some things off the hard drive onto his laptop. Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Assuming a standard 3.5 inch IDE drive use a caddy like this

or No.2 here

Something like this cable should let you get the data off the old drive.
