laptop sound keeps cutting out and in when folder is clicked?

my laptop is doing some strange things. i have it connected to external speakers for most of the time and one day i heard a windows click sound which is strange because i specifically turned them off (system sounds). I keep getting these clicks whenever i click on any folder?

and recently i tried the laptop without the speakers, with only headphones and the same thing happened. i have never seen this before and would like to know how to fix this ...

laptop spec: dell inspiron N5010 windows 7 HP 1 month old (rough estimate)
