Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop won't shut down

After start/turn off computer/shutdown there is a few minutes of nothing happening except the hour glass display & the it goes & the computer is still running. Task Manager via ctrl/alt/del & shutdown works but takes a long time - longer tha startup! XP Home SP2 Any ideas?
