unable to acess hard drive

have an external hard drive that asks me to format when i connect it but if i do this i will lose all my saved data and holiday snaps i have 2 pc one running xp and one running windows 7 previously the drive worked with both can any one suggest a solution

should have added that before this problem i shut the pc down with the external drive still running

It sounds is if you have corrupted the drive, use a program like RECUVER (free) to recover the files onto another drive, then format it.

You will have corrupted the Partition Table
