Menus flashing on and of in menus

I am finding menu titles in various applications, including in Internet Explorer 9 and Microsoft Office 2007 Applications (Word, Excel.etc.)are flashing on and off. When clicking on them the drop down boxes only remain open for an instance and then close not giving me the opportunity to select any of the options. In the MS Office 2007 applications numbers and letters flash on and off on the right hand side of the menu titles. I am also having some difficulty in entering words in Search boxes. I think such behaviour indicates some kind of virus but various scans using McAfee (BT Net Protect Plus), Malwarebytes and Lavasoft Adaware do not show anything.

Late last night I decided to work out what I had installed lately to see if any of such applications might be the cause of my problems. One of them was a program called Advanced System Care that I decided to try only because it claimed that it had "The most advanced and convenient backup and restore technology that automatically backs up all changes with one click in the Rescue Center to undo the changes at any time you like when something unexpected happens." I therefore undid the changes that the program had made and now the problems I had have gone!
