I have windows 7 dual booted with XP, on separate sata drives. I want to get rid of XP and use the drive for backup. I tried formatting XP from “computer” it would not let me, I tried formatting from “manage” it was greyed out. What else can I try ?

Try Partition Wizard from Windows 7 (or the Bootable CD) if that won't let you.

Or make a Linux Live CD eg Ubuntu and use Gnome Partition Editor (gpedit). Try Linux/Run from CD. Don't install.

Use easyBCD to remove your XP boot entry.
