Epson R220 saying 'General Error' with flashing lights?

Hi there, My Epson R220 printer has been saying for a while that some parts will need a service soon but i have been able to carry on regardless until tonight when i turned it on i got two flashing red lights and an on-screen message saying 'General Error'. Please can i ask what i can do to keep this brilliant printer going?

Empty the waste ink tank and reset the counter using ssc

Thank you. I am just about to use ssc but it is asking me do i want to remove the chip? What chip is this please?

You should not have to remove chips to reset the protection counter, sounds as if you are trying to reset the ink cartridges
