excel 2007 cell formatting

Windows 7 - every time I click on a cell the 4 cells below are highlighted - how do I stop this. Have been trying for about an hour - bet it is really simple?

It's not just you, try a google for: excel 2007 I click on a cell and cells below are highlighted

seems as if it might be a bug in the program http://www.computing.net/answers/office/excel-click-1-cell-selects-multiple/7549.html

Thanks for all the answers to this one. I have followed some of the leads and in doing so I did the following instead of clicking with the left side click with the right and only one cell appears.
