I have just removed the heatsink from a duff mobo and the CPU was stuck to it. I seperated them but the brown mating compound has come off. Is this compound needed to fit the new CPU and if so where can I get some?. Am I right in thinking it is used to make a good contact for cooling.

Can always wipe off the residue on the CPU with a bit of alcohol. Just a bit mind?

The cleaner is really a waste of money unless it is something you are going to be using on a fairly regular basis. I use a dab of aftershave and a microfiber cloth.
