Vodafone dongle malfunction

My Vodafone dongle has stopped working on my Ecee netbook (XP) but continues to operate ok on my Tishiba laptop (Vista). The Vodaphone online helpdesk is as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
The dongle is made by Huawei and is about 18 months old.
When I attempt to go online on the netbook the Vodafone software can't find the the device and the installation wizard fails to find the software to reinstal it even when online thru my home broadband.
Pfresumably there is a piece of software that I can download to fix this?

Often the software is in a ROM chip within the dongle itself. Can you uninstall the software from the Netbook, reboot, then plug in the dongle so that Windows finds new hardware and reinstalls the software?

That in effect is what I've tried. When I plug in the dongle I get a 'found new hardware' message, but the installation wizard cannot find the software.

When you plug the dongle in does it not create a new drive in the computer, possibly a "virtual" CD drive, with the software in it? You might have to navigate manually to the drive to load the software if Windows doesn't find it automatically.
