Hi all, I currently have two virtual drives when I click my computer tab. My DVD drive has dissapered. I have gone into device manager and manually uninstalled the two virtual drives then scanned for updates. I see my dvd flash up then it goes off then the two virtual drives come back. This is driving me bonkers pls help with any suggestions. I am running win7.

Have you got anything else connected such as a printer? Are you sure that one of the drives is not your DVD drive. You probably have already checked this but it's worth mentioning.

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41 Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager. (This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double

click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog

will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect. This utility is only intended for Windows® XP, but also appears to work for Vista and Windows 7. You may need Administrator level access to use this utility. If you do not have Administrator level access, the

program will say it is finished, but will not have made any changes.

Similar fixes http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/ works for W7 Vista or XP http://aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip

or manual fix Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-

08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer. If in doubt make a restore point before making changes.

Ok thx for all your help guys. I managed to get my dvd drive back after downloading and running one of the programs off Fruitbats post. so I was very happy. After shutting down my comp and restarting it for a second time the dvd drive has once again vanished :-( The virtual drives have stayed there throughout. Seems I am back to square one. I can only assume that the registry entry that the prog changed has gone back to a default status. Would really appreciate more guidance if anyone can help?

Hi I did a scan with AVG fruitbat. Is this what you meant? Anyways it was all clear. For some strange reason my DVD drive has now re-appeared! I am starting to get very confused. Havent restarted my computer yet to see if it stays available. I will keep you posted.

How long ago did all this start, if it was recent, try a System Restore back to before it started.

Hi all just a big thanks for all your replys and taking the time to help me. I found the problem with my comp. The virtual drives thing was a red herring. The real problem is with the IDE on my MOBO. I am 90% certain it has gone faulty or on its way. In BIOS it will intermittently show my DVD drive but when I log out of BIOS and restart it disappears. It is intermittently showing in win7 as well. I did a fresh install on another drive of win 7 to confirm it wasnt my OS. Again the DVD was not showing even though I had no conflicts in my device manager. I guess buying an external USB CD is a cheaper alternative than buying a new MOBO.

Thanks once again all who replied.
