My pals laptop (Win 7) has the above folder on his C Drive taking up 40gb. Ist it of any use on the C drive? Is it wise to delete it?

Windows 7 has it's own backup facility has your friend made a backup using it at some point and aimed it to save on C?

I don't think Win7 will allow you to backup to C:\ - assuming this is the system drive. As you say, not a lot of good there. I would delete it and set up the backup program again, pointing it at a different partition, drive, or preferably an external HD.
