Can't Enter Username & Password to Log On

I've been trying to start my PC (WinXP Home SP3) in safe mode by tapping F8 when I power on but without success.I was attempting to resolve an irritating Windows Validation Error with MS Security Essentials. Now I cannot type in my user name or password in the boxes on the log on page so I can't operate.I've tried unplugging and powering up after a time and also control/alt/del pressed twice but no joy. Any ideas, please? As a last resort I have the Win CD & product key but if I use this will I lose data?
