Legacy device drivers compatibility

Compatibility question...
I've acquired a cable intended to convert RS-232 signalling to USB, to link a GPS device to a Win7 netbook
The accompanying driver software offers only 'Windows98/ME' or 'Windows 2000'. I seek to use this cable on a netbook with Windows 7 installed.
Would any well-informed forumeer comment on whether or not trying to install this software is likely to lead to tears - or otherwise? Or suggest a potential source of updated driver?

Do not bother with the software, just plug in the device and see if Windows 7 loads any drivers for it.
