HD or not HD? with BBC iPlayer and my monitor

Having built/improved my PC[New Mobo H/D in old 'box power supply etc] and putting it through its paces I loaded BBC Iplayer and took a tour It works all very well -

Then I thought if I select a High Definition programme, and it plays, am I seeing H/D on the monitor? The screen indicated broadband width and the connection is via BT Infinity.

The graphics are the on-board graphics using the DVI channel of the Foxconn A76#L-K3.0 the onboard graphics being ATI RADEON HD3000 GPU

I don't have a particularly fancy setup - Win7 64-bit in 3GB RAM with 10Mbps Cable broadband - but the difference in quality between normal and HD iPlayer is unmistakeable.

Either I am getting a really good picture on my TV or I am getting no improvement from the HD channels. I cannot see any difference at all, but that might be down to the reception I am getting since my area went fully digital. I actually get a worse service than pre full digital days. So the jury is still out for me on whether HD is all its cracked up to be. Which of course has little to do with your question.

GengiscantYou do have a valid point, one in fact the I frequently make in the HD or not to HD debate My TV is not HD enabled therefore I would have to change TV and get a 'Box' as I understand it.

Would the expense of doing so at my age [78] and eye condition[ at any age] be worth it?

I suspect not.

It is all very subjective I feel.

SparkyJack - as for the first point, if you are viewing it on your computer monitor you would notice the difference between normal and HD, especially if viewing full screen. I just tested it myself on a 15.4" laptop 2 days ago.

If your tellys not up to it and you're wondering whether it's worth upgrading, well, you have just upgraded your computer kit . . . was it worth doing that at your age?

Go on, get some glasses - plenty of life left in you yet !!

Also, almost any flat screen telly will be HD ready, so go treat yourself. Prices start at under £100 for the smallest screen and you can get a HD Freeview Panasonic Viera 32" for £300.
