MP3 player connection

Hi, just got a secondhand MP3 player and connected it to the pc (XP). It charged and I downloaded some files to it to try it out and it was fine. I've just tried connecting it to the PC again and it says the USB device wasn't recognised, I've tried several times but no luck although it seemed to connect once then changed it's mind. Any clues out there? Thanks.

Tried a different usb port? Rebooted pc?

Yep, tried several times, very strange after working first time.
