My OS is XP Prof' with an elderly edition of MS Word.Is it possible to scan in a text document and then amend the text of that document prior to printing?

Yes, but you need to scan using OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. Scanning normally produces a "graphics" file which you won't be able to edit. Basic OCR software is often supplied with scanners.
