Windows Explorer very slow to open DVD-RW disc

On a Packard Bell iMedia D2525 running Win 7 Hm Prem, Windows Exp is very, very slow to open the disc in the DVD-RW writer. I'm talking minutes. When DVD-RW drive E is clicked a green progress bar with the short path 'Computer' written in it starts from the top left of the screen and gets progressively slower as it approaches the right end of its travel.

What do you think is causing this and how do I cure it? My 3 old machines running 95, 98SE and WinXP never did this, but I suppose that's progress. Good old MS.
