Re-scalling video

I have a 2hour long film which when played looks like viewing it through a letter box. How do I rescale it so that the video fills the screen? Using WMP is no help as viewing it at 200% scale is still too small. Besides that I want to burn it to a DVD, eventually. I have AVS4YOU, and I couldn't find any help in there. I've seen references of AviSyth, is this a solution?

Is it set up for widescreen 16:9 or another ratio? What does it look like in full screen?
