Ubuntu Internet setup manually

I have managed to lose my internet connection, and cannot work out how to get it back. I am a broadband cable user with virgin and when installing ubuntu everything went so easily, now for what ever reason I have lost it, and for the life of me fail to re-instate it manually.

Any help would be most welcome

if you have a copy of windows use that to fix the connection, or use an Ethernet cable to link your PC to the router.
