If one deletes an e-mail account in Thunderbird are the previously received messages lost or recoverable?

If using POP3, deleting an account won't have any effect on messages which have already been downloaded and saved in the PC.

With IMAP, Thunderbird synchronises with the provider's IMAP server and, if the account is deleted, you would no longer have access to the messages.
