PC only displaying via HDMI

Hi - hope somebody can help,

I upgraded my PC system yesterday and bought a HP s5-1015uk base unit with a HP s2331a monitor. Got home and tried to connect them together using the VGA, then the DVI cables, but no joy - no signal detected both times. I then used a HDMI cable to connect the base unit to my LG TV and it worked first time.

My old PC monitor does not work on the new HP base unit, but the new HP monitor works on the old base unit... I borrowed a HDMI to DVI adaptor to test and this works, so now I have a HDMI cable going from the base unit into the adaptor in the DVI slot to keep me going.

Surely the monitor should work straight out of the box via VGA or DVI? I was wondering if the VGA and DVI slots aren't faulty then maybe I need to alter some settings?

The computer has a Nvidia Geforce 405 card if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any help...

Geoff.

If you go into 'Control Panel/Display/Settings' can you reset the display to the VGA setting there?
