Stereo Mix missing in Vista Laptop

I run Vista Home Premium on a Sony Vaio VGN-NS30E/S laptop and want to record via my soundcard, but only the microphone shows in the "mixer" window. There are no disabled or hidden recording devices, (same with playback devices, only the speakers show up). Device manager just shows "Realtek High Definition Audio" under sound, video and game controllers. Is there a way to restore the stereo mix?
