Longest network cable?

I'd like to put an internet access point in a place which will require about 200 metres of cable and before I invest in that amount of cable, I'd like to know if it is actually possible!

The Router/Modem is fairly new (although I can't recall make/model at present) but would it need to be upgraded?

The ISP is BTConnect; currently works great both cabled and wi-fi. Will 200 metres of cable degrade the speed?

Thanks for any advice.

Maximum length of ethernet cable run is generally 100 metres for Cat5/Cat6.

Cheers.

"Will 200 metres of cable degrade the speed?"

In a word, yes. If you want to install a run longer than 100 metres you'll need to introduce a repeater at the halfway point.

Thanks, that's an option I'd not known about. I'll be sorting this out in a month or so.

An alternative, if the locations are on the same mains circuit, is the use a pair of Powerline Homeplugs
