Using a network HDD to stream media to PS3

Currently i have an ext HDD connected to my PC (via USB 2) which contains all my media files. My PC and PS3 are connected to my router (ethernet wired). Using PS3 Media Server on my PC i can stream all my movies (avi, x264, music etc) to the PS3.

What i want to know:

Will a network HDD connected directly to my router still operate in the same fashion?

Would I be able to access my movies without the PC being on?

Will the new set up be faster with transfers etc?

Thanks

Jon
