DVD drive goes missing

Could really do with some help on this one. The problem is a Toshiba L300 149 laptop,running Vista SP2, belonging to a relative. Fault described to me was the main ID (also administrator) was full of virus and would not operate at all and on the guest ID the DVD drive was not working.

Cleared all the virus, main one was "HDDiagnostic" so main ID now working. Now to the DVD, when booted up the Drive is shown in device manager and also in Computer, but as soon as the tray is opened the drive disappears from the system so not working.

Googled the problem and a solution was remove Upper/Lower filters from registry, this did not improve matters. Tried safe mode, same thing happened. I have a Puppy Linux Live Cd that boots and loads linux into RAM. It worked on boot up into linux and the dvd was showing but again when the tray was opened it disappears.

I am now lost as it seems Vista is not the problem as the fault is in linux as well, has anyone got any ideas?

You may have a ROOT virus, which normal virus checker will miss, try a program like ADAWARE or SPYBOT to remove this.

A root virus lives in the first 255 bytes of the harddrive which is reserved for system boot up files, and so most virus checkers leave it alone.

You may need to reload the drivers for the laptop.
